Bearded Dragon Enclosure Redesign: Day 6 Update and Feeding Strategies

This blog post details Day 6 of a bearded dragon's rescue and the ongoing efforts to improve its living environment and dietary habits. The focus is on a significant enclosure redesign aimed at providing a more stimulating and comfortable habitat for the reptile. This involved removing underutilized features, adding larger, more accessible basking and hiding areas, and strategically repositioning key elements like the water bowl and hammock to encourage natural thermoregulation. The changes are documented with careful observation of the dragon's response and adaptation to the new layout. In addition to the habitat improvements, the post addresses concerns regarding the dragon's inconsistent appetite. Experiments with various feeder insects, including superworms, pinkies, and dubia roaches, are described. The current strategy centers on establishing a regular feeding schedule using dubia roaches, emphasizing careful portion control to prevent overeating and promote a healthier eating pattern. The overall goal is to ensure the bearded dragon's long-term health and well-being through a combination of environmental enrichment and responsible feeding practices.

Enclosure Redesign and Observations

Day 6 of my bearded dragon's rescue journey involved a significant enclosure redesign. The old small hammock and large log were removed as she wasn't utilizing that area. A large hammock was installed in a new location, though the final placement remains undetermined. The water bowl's position was adjusted to a corner, intended to be its permanent spot.

A giant hide log was added, offering a shaded area and additional basking options. I plan to reposition a rock feature for better hammock access and shaded space under the basking light. This provides my bearded dragon with choice in terms of basking spots and cooler areas.

The new giant hammock allows for easier climbing and comfortable basking. The bearded dragon seems to appreciate the adjustments, actively exploring her surroundings. She's demonstrated healthy thermoregulation, moving between basking and cooler areas as needed.

Feeding Strategies and Appetite

My bearded dragon's appetite has been inconsistent, prompting experimentation with different feeder insects. I've tried superworms, pinkies, and now dubia roaches. I'm focusing on roaches for now to see if a consistent food source improves her eating habits.

There's no immediate cause for alarm, as she may have been on a naturally infrequent feeding schedule. We're observing her behavior to ensure healthy weight maintenance. Overfeeding is to be avoided, aiming for 3-4 medium to large roaches on feeding days.

The goal is to establish a regular feeding routine that prevents her from overeating on a single day. This approach should help her establish a healthier eating pattern and improve her overall well-being.

While there are still some concerns about food intake, there is no need for immediate veterinary attention. Continuous monitoring and consistent care are essential. The focus is on creating a comfortable and enriching space for her long-term care.
